In 1998 the General Assembly passed legislation drafted by the Attorney General; permitting the public posting of sex offenders on the internet. Previously if a citizen wanted to find out if their new neighbor was a child molester, they had to go to the Sheriff's Office and identify the subject by name. Now The Union County Sheriff's Office provides this information through it's website along with other important information.
The Union Sheriff's Office Website contains information about convicted sex offenders living in Union County and can be accessed at http://members.carol.net/ucso . This list is posted to alert possible victims of potential danger, not to punish or embarrass offenders. Unfortunately, many sexual predators fail to control their obsessive impulses and repeat their offenses. Clearly, the Sheriff has a greater responsibility to ensure the safety of victims than to protect the privacy of convicted criminals.
It is a crime to use this information to commit other crimes such as attacking an offender listed on this registry.
